Adventure South enjoys an awesome reputation based around its innovative itineraries and great guides. Every year we delight in meeting potential co-guides and sharing their experiences. To date we have never advertised for guides - benefiting from the principle that "good find good". As such we are always open to a meeting and to explore how we can meet each other's needs. To assist with this process, here are a few key points to consider.

  • Adventure South will be seeking a 2+ season working relationship with you. This allows us to maximise on your skills and our training.
  • To a large extent most 'hard skills' and qualifications are of lesser importance. Personality, past experience and overall enjoyment in other people are prime selection criteria.
  • All our guiding involves a degree of driving across a wide range of smallish vehicles. (Our biggest bus to date is an 25 seater, 8 meter Fuso.) It is essential for any guiding with us that you have a New Zealand P Class license with a heavy vehicle endorsement (Note - to get this you will need to have held a NZ drivers license for 2 years).
The process to get this license - http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/factsheets/42.html - takes time and has some cost - in some instances we can be persuaded to provide some assistance with this. An ability to back a trailer is a major advantage!
  • It is unlikely you will have the range of people skills and experiences to be a great guide if you are under 25 years of age. We can however be convinced otherwise and certainly two of our best guides wouldn't have meet that criteria when they applied. If your keen then be prepared to persevere and convince us of the why!
  • We believe visitors to NZ expect NZ guides. That should allow them to discuss the Treaty of Waitangi issues or our MMP electorial process, or even just to know how far it is from Te Puke to Hamilton. Again we have some awesome exceptions to that rule.
  • We value our guide selection process and will not employ sight unseen. You will need to get yourself to Christchurch and come and join us for a coffee. (This 'interview has also been held in London, Canmore and Amsterdam - so we are somewhat flexible!)
  • Each year we hold a 4 day guide training course in October. It is difficult to place guides who have not participated in that programme.
So are you still keen?
Fine - from here you need to do two things.
  • Make contact with us by email or phone, sending us some information about your background, past work experiences and future plans. CV's are fine but the results of your 5th form English exams tend to be a bit superfluous.
  • Work out with us, how we get to meet you. As previously stated this has occurred in some overseas cities - but not too often!
From there, if you like us as much as we like you, we can explore the possible work options for the coming season(s).

What can you expect from us?
  • A fun working environment with some amazing clients participating in awesome and innovative itineraries.
  • Trip programmes that are 120% supported by a great administration system and staff 24 hours / day. No missed bookings or broken down buses!
  • A daily $ rate that is fair and reflects an industry norm.
  • We provide our core of 'full-time' guides approximately 20 days / month of work over the six month season.
  • A professional and comprehensive training programme designed to complement your existing skills and provide a brush up or exposure to a range of new skills. Foodhandling course, driving assessment, first aid, cycle/ bus maintenance programmes, interpersonal skills, food preparation etc etc.
  • Lastly, a chance to be heard and to express your views on improvements and suggested changes.
